Post Depth & Spacing Guide
Post Depth Rule of Thirds
Bury posts at least ⅓ of their total length. A 6 ft fence needs 8 ft posts set 2 ft deep. An 8 ft fence needs 12 ft posts set 4 ft deep. In cold climates, always set posts below the frost line.
Post Spacing
6 ft spacing is standard for most wood fences — it offers the best strength-to-cost ratio. 8 ft spacing reduces post count but demands heavier 2×6 rails. Never exceed 8 ft for wood construction.
Material Guide by Fence Type
Wood Privacy / Picket
- Posts: 4×4 pressure-treated, one every 6–8 ft.
- Rails: 2×4 lumber — 2 rails per bay up to 6 ft tall, 3 rails for 8 ft.
- Boards: 1×6 cedar or pine for privacy; 1×4 for picket style.
- Concrete: 2 bags of 60 lb quick-set per post hole.
Split Rail
- Posts set 8 ft apart. Rails are 11 ft long and overlap into each post’s drilled holes.
- 2-Rail for decorative borders; 3-Rail for livestock or larger enclosures.
Vinyl Panel
- Pre-assembled panels in 6 or 8 ft widths. No painting needed, very low maintenance.
- Always add post caps to protect hollow post tops from water intrusion.
Chain Link
- Line posts every 10 ft; heavier terminal posts at ends, corners, and gates.
- Fabric rolls are 50 ft long. Top rail sections are 21 ft and connected with sleeves.
